Humble Auto Repair Myth Busting

Our Humble Auto Repair Shop Knows When You Need A Brake Job.

Your vehicle carries some pretty valuable cargo and us here at Whittyz Auto Repair have definitely seen our fair share of problems. Let’s talk about a major safety aspect of your car, the braking system. The braking system on most people’s cars goes unnoticed since it is “out of sight, out of mind.” That is, until a problem crops up, which is usually in the form of the proverbial grinding when you push the brake pedal. What are the most common signs of brake failure?

Humble Auto Repair

Common Warning Signs For Brake Trouble

-Poor braking performance, (hard to stop the car)
-Squealing or grinding noises during braking
-Pulling to one side, or “grabbing”
-Loss of brake pedal
-Pulsation of the brake pedal during braking
-Clicking noises during braking
-Excessive drag during acceleration (“Anchors Away” Syndrome)
-Lit ABS light for the antilock brakes
-Let’s take a look at these warning signs in more detail.

Poor braking performance can occur for a few reasons:

1. Crystallized brake pads and/or shoes: The brakes have become hardened from heat and are no longer effective at grabbing and stopping the rotation of the brake drum or rotor. This condition usually occurs after the brakes have been overused, either because of excessive panic stops or “riding of the brake.” The braking material must be soft enough to wear and grab hold of the drum or rotor to stop the car. Excessive overheating hardens the braking material and consequently, the brakes become ineffective. If you’re experiencing this you need to contact our Humble auto repair shop immediately.

2. Oil or grease soaked brakes can affect braking. Oil from the rear differential or front transaxle can get on the brakes from an oil seal that might have failed. Grease from a failed rubber boot on a front end component (such as a ball joint or tie rod) can find its way onto the brakes and cause this symptom as well.

3. Loss of power assist from the power brake booster is another cause of poor braking performance. It can occur due to a loss of engine vacuum, or deterioration of the vacuum brake booster diaphragm.

4. “Hot Spots” on the brake drums or rotors are hardened spots in the metal makeup of the drum or rotor that form from excessive overheating of the brakes. They resist the natural wear of the friction material (brake pads and shoes) that must take place during the braking process, consequently loss of braking power takes place. The pads and shoes have nothing to grip.

Squealing or grinding noises coming from the brakes: This is usually an indication of worn or glazed brake pads. The squealing noise comes from wear indicators, which come in contact with the brake rotor when the brake pads are worn to the point of needing replacement. This design “tells” you that it’s time to check the brakes. Unfortunately, most people wait until they hear the grinding, which means that the brakes have ground through the wear indicators and into the rotors. If you hear squealing, get your brakes checked! Our Humble auto repair shop can schedule very quickly and you can set an appointment by clicking here. Waiting for the grinding noise will cost you money! There are no wear indicators on the rear brakes. Have them checked every six months or when you have the tires rotated. NOT when you hear the grinding! Procrastination has financial consequences.

Pulling or Grabbing to One Side: This can happen for a number of reasons. Pulling can occur from maladjustment of the brakes, a frozen brake, brake fluid leakage, frozen emergency brake cables, or oil/grease leakage on the brake shoes or pads.

Loss of Brake Pedal: This condition is usually a result of brake fluid leakage due to failure of a brake hose or a rusted metal brake line, a worn wheel cylinder or brake caliper, or a worn master cylinder. A simple “once over” of the system will reveal what’s going on.

Pulsation of the Brake Pedal: The cause of this condition is simply heat and wear. Heat and mechanical wear thin out the brake rotor or drum which causes warping. This warping translates into a pulsation (up and down motion) of the brake pedal while applying the brakes. In this case, re-machining or replacement is the answer. Make sure you have the brakes checked for wear if they are pulsating, because they are usually worn beyond their serviceable life when they get to this point and replacement would be in order.

Clicking Noises During Braking: This has been a problem ever since disc brakes came on the scene. The disc brake pads are held in place by pressure from the caliper against the brake rotor. It’s somewhat of a loose fit. The factory installs “anti-rattle” devices to stop movement of the brake pads, which will stop the clicking noise. These devices are made of spring steel. Over time they become brittle and break, allowing the brake pad to ride loosely in its seat, causing rattling and/or clicking during braking.

Excessive Drag During Acceleration: Ever feel like someone “threw the anchor out” during acceleration? Maybe it’s because the emergency brake cables are frozen due to rust buildup and are not releasing. A simple way to avoid this is to use your emergency brake! Remember this very simple rule … “If you don’t use it, you loose it!”

Lit ABS Light: A plethora of cars with antilock brakes experience a lit ABS light. In this case, have the wiring harnesses and electrical plugs leading to the wheel speed sensors checked for wear and corrosion. These electrical components are subjected to environmental conditions. Consequently, they suffer wear from exposure and might need replacement or repair.

There you have it! Check your brakes every six months to avoid unpleasant surprises or come by our Humble auto repair shop for help. High dollar brake work can be “head off at the pass” simply by keeping a watchful eye on your brakes.

Humble Auto Repair: Transmission Maintenance.

Do I Really Need To Replace That Transmission Fluid?

Here’s the scenario, you’re at an Humble auto repair shop and the mechanic walks to the front and tells you that you need a transmission fluid flush. In you’re head you’re thinking “oh yea I’m so sure I do!”. Most cases though, if your mechanic comes to give you that news, you should probably just go ahead and get it done because the ramifications could prove costly!

Whitty'z Humble Auto Repair

Costs Of Not Flushing Your Transmission Fluid

Just ask anyone who’s had to pay for their transmission to be replaced and they’ll gladly tell you that the transmission fluid flush that they differed would’ve been 100x worth it to them if they could go back in time and have it done. It’s so important to make sure you understand the costs and point of preventative maintenance. The whole reason of it is to PREVENT something really wrong from happening. Having your transmission replaced can cost anywhere from $2,500 – $5,000 depending on your vehicle and the Humble auto repair shop you go to. If your vehicle is your daily driver then you could be out of a job, then out of a home if your transmission bites the dust. This is why you should almost always just go ahead and have the fluid flushed if it’s recommended to you.

A good rule of thumb is to have your transmissions fluid flushed every 50,000 miles. Although some brand say you don’t need it until after 100,000 (and some For vehicles stating not until 150,000 miles) it’s best to just play it safe and get it done once every 50,000 miles. If you’re doing a lot of towing or in-city stop and go driving, then your vehicle is at risk of really needing that flush every 50,000 miles. That kind of driving raises the temperature in your transmission that helps to lubricate moving parts and keep gears cool. As your transmission fluid deteriorates, it will go from red, to a much darker fluid from the wear and tear. It may also acquire a burned odor that could indicate it needs to be changed or that the transmission is developing mechanical problems. Another indication it needs changing is dirt or other debris in the fluid. When you take your vehicle in for an oil change or other routine service, the auto repair facility may urge you to pay for a transmission-fluid change or flush. Even if they can show you that the fluid is darker than original, that might not mean you need fresh fluid right now. Step back, check the maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual and see what the manufacturer recommends before you decide. This also will give you time to price shop for the right auto repair shop in Humble.

Whitty’z Humble Auto Repair: Preventative Maintenance.

Preventative Maintenance

All Humble auto repair mechanics can definitely agree that a lot of the problems they are constantly having to repair are problems that could have been avoided just by proper vehicle maintenance.

Preventative Maintenance 101

When you pull up to a red light and you hear a vehicle’s brakes squealing bad or you hear a screech from under their hood; you can almost bet that they aren’t taking proper care of their vehicle! Whether it’s just having a belt repaired because it’s worn and cracked, or properly repairing brake pads / rotors when it’s time; the results of not doing these tasks can be extremely costly!

If you’ve experienced any of these problems and you’re looking for an Humble auto repair shop, you can always reach us at: 281-964-2886 for a free estimate. We’ll try to get you in and seen as soon as humanly possible! If you’re in a pinch we can help you with scheduling a tow or scheduling an appointment online.

Preventative Maintenance Tips 101

So with that being said, here are some excellent tips to keep in mind for maintaining your vehicle and avoiding all of those costly mistakes that can cost you thousands more than expected.

Spark Plugs: Checking and maintaining your spark plugs can be a very simple task to check that can ensure that your vehicle always starts properly. If your spark plugs are soiled then you could be left out in the middle of no where while your vehicle fails to start.

Headlights: This one is pretty simple as well and easily noticeable. Always make sure your headlights are working properly to ensure you can view objects from a safe distance + avoiding getting some costly traffic tickets!

Air Filters: Making sure your air filters are clean and effective is imperative for your engine’s performance and your own health. Air filters remove toxins from your cabin air as well as assist the engine in running smoothly. An old, dirty air filter in your vehicle is the equivalent to trying to breathe while having a mouth full of cotton balls…no good!

Belts: Always make sure to check your belts and ensure that they’re not cracked or frayed. This is very dangerous and can also cause you to be helpless while you car doesn’t start.

Oil Change + Transmission Fluid Checks: By having regular oil changes + transmission fluid checks, you can avoid some very serious repair costs! You should be getting your oil changed once every 3,000 – 5,000 miles and transmission fluid flush every 25,000 – 30,000 miles. Transmission issues don’t go away on their own and when left untreated, you’re liable to end up with a new transmission and a $4,000 bill!

Whitty’z Humble Auto Repair: 2WD, AWD and 4×4

One thing all Humble auto repair experts know very well is the drivetrain.  The drivetrain is what essentially puts the power generated by the motor to the axles.  There are three common kinds of drivetrains: the regular 2WD ( FWD or RWD), the stability giving AWD and the changing 4×4.

 Humble Auto Repair

2WD (2 Wheel Drive)

In a FWD car or truck, the engine’s power is relayed to the front wheels. Using the power received from the engine, the front-wheels are in essence “pulling” the car to create motion. The rear wheels do not receive power and are only “following” the front wheels.

In the case of a RWD car or truck, it is the rear wheels that receive power from the engine, and motion is created by the rear wheels “pushing the car”. Like a bicycle, the front wheels are not relayed to any power source and turn because of motion created from the rear wheels.

4×4

A part-time 4WD system allows the driver to manually select if the power from the engine is relayed to only two wheels or to all 4 wheels. The default setting on a 4WD car is usually rear-wheel-drive. Using a switch, the driver can select to have power transferred to all 4 wheels.

There are 3 settings a driver can choose from on a part-time 4WD vehicle: 2WD, 4Hi and 4Lo. By switching to either 4Hi or 4Lo, the driver engages all four wheels. The difference between Hi and Lo settings resides mostly in the torque provided to the wheels under each setting. Lo mode receives the most torque and the most power but also is restricted in speed and is most often used to get out of very difficult off-road conditions. Hi mode on the other hand would normally be engaged in snowy or slippery conditions (or muddin’).

 AWD (All Wheel Drive)

All-wheel-drive systems are identical to full-time 4WD system except they do not have a 4Lo mode. It is impossible to increase the low-speed torque to escape difficult situations, making AWD vehicles less capable in rugged terrain or harsh conditions. However, AWD vehicles are more popular than 4WD in today’s automotive market because all-wheel-drive is sufficient for most people’s driving habits.  AWD is especially useful when you live in a place where it rains a lot.  The AWD has a little more traction control so you don’t have to worry about slipping and sliding.

Whitty’z Houston Auto Repair: 2014 Lamborghini Aventador

At Whitty’z Houston Auto Repair Shop, we LOVE fast cars!  We’re especially enamored with the ones we can’t have for some strange reason..  That brings us to the 2014 Lamborghini Aventador!  The latest in a line of otherworldly supercars that includes the Miura, Countach, Diablo and Murcielago, the Aventador is Lamborghini’s technology- and performance-packed flagship. Stupefyingly quick, aggressively angular and awe-inspiring in a deeply primal way, it’s also more comfortable and refined than its feral predecessors.

Houston Auto RepairUnderneath its attention-grabbing stealth jet/alien snubfighter exterior, the Aventador is underpinned by a carbon-fiber chassis that teams with a number of other carbon and aluminum components throughout the car to keep weight down. These measures help the Aventador tip the scales at about 200 pounds lighter than its predecessor, although at just over 4000 pounds it still isn’t exactly dainty.

Specifications

Concerns about weight – and most other rational thoughts – are extinguished once one experiences the Aventador’s operatic and absurdly potent V12. Displacing 6.5 liters and boasting a lofty 8500 redline, this beast of a motor makes 691 horsepower and 509 lb-ft of torque at 5,500 rpm.  When you couple that much power with the car’s Haldex all-wheel-drive system, what you get is a zero-to-62 mph time of just 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 217 mph.  Helping transfer all 691 horsepower to the ground at all four corners are two different tires and wheel sizes – 255/35/R19 for front wheels and tires, with massive 335/30R20 wheels and tires for the rear. Stopping the big Lambo are 400x38m six-piston carbon ceramic brakes in the front, and 380x38mm carbon ceramic brakes in the rear.

Features

The first, a start-stop system that shuts down the engine to save fuel at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic, is a supercapacitor-based system that’s both lighter and faster to restart the motor than a traditional battery-based system. The second is a cylinder deactivation system that shuts down half of the V12’s cylinders during light-throttle situations, temporarily turning the motor into a straight-six. When the driver lays into the throttle, the other six cylinders fire back up for full power.  I can appreciate their mission to be more fuel efficient.  Despite those technologies, there’s only so much they can do to enhance the mileage of the inherently thirsty V12 – fuel economy is rated at 11 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway.  All Aventador models come standard with dual front, front side and front knee airbags in addition to traction and stability control systems.

Whitty’z Humble Auto Repair: Google’s Self-Driving Car

Whitty’z Humble Auto Repair Shop doesn’t get a lot of business with self driving cars, we’re still fascinated with them!  We know companies like BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo have been putting automated aids in their cars, things like blind spot monitors, lane correction and the stop feature that completely stops the car if it senses an object.  But Google is talking about a car that drives itself completely.  No matter the term used, the end result is that some element of control of the vehicle passes from your hands and feet to a computer. In its simplest form, cruise control could be considered part of this technology, though traditionally it is referred to as a driving aid.

Humble Auto Repair

What is it?

Google’s newly announced car, for example, completely computerizes all the work of driving and replaces all pilot input with a start and stop button. You won’t need to know how to drive. In fact, you don’t even have to care about cars anymore if you’d rather not. Google’s vision happens to be a pod you travel in as if by magic; other makers may opt to have control available that you can enable or disable.

How does it work?

Google’s car is outfitted with a staggering array of equipment to keep tabs on where it is and to track its surroundings. A LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) scanner on the car’s roof maps the world in real time, similar to Microsoft’s Kinect. It tracks depth and distance, acting as the car’s eyes. That info is compared to stored data to help discern pedestrians from inanimate objects.  In tandem, radar and ultrasonic scanners (plus cameras) keep track of the 360 degrees of space around the car. This includes reading signage, watching for road hazards, monitoring for red lights and everything else you normally watch out for while driving. Google has been adding scenarios for road hazards such as construction and even recognizing and understanding a cyclist’s hand signals for lane changes and the like. Think of this system as the car’s brain. Google may be at the forefront of this new frontier of automobiles, but the company will likely remain behind the scenes in the industry. While we don’t see Google selling cars, we do expect it will stay an innovator in the space, developing the platform for car vendors. Like how its Android OS is adopted by cellphone makers, it’s not hard to imagine the same happening for automotive tech.

What do people say?

Some folks are going to hate it, plain and simple. Having no control of the metal box carting you through space at high speed is likely to be an intimidating experience for some. So much happens around you while you’re driving: What if the car doesn’t react properly? Or at all? What if the system crashes? All of these are valid concerns, and all are possible. To the credit of interested parties, years of work have gone into this research by many companies. Google alone has logged 700,000 autonomous miles of driving. That’s almost two round-trips to the moon, or nearly 30 laps around our little blue planet.
